Testing Your Soil Drainage
Posted on 16 May 2008
The best and easiest way to test your soil is to dig a 1′ x 1′ hole in the lowest part of your potential garden. Then, fill the hole with water. If the hole takes less than half an hour to drain completely, it means your soil has a good amount of sand (large particles) in it and is best suited for desert plants. If the hole takes longer than 30 minutes to drain, it means your soil has a good amount of clay (small particles) in it and is best suited for water plants. However, if your hole takes around 30 minutes to drain, your soil has the perfect drainage for the average garden plant.
